Rebuilding communication after twelve years together
The challenge
Three years of conversations that only ended in rows
Every conversation ended with one of them having to give in. Each felt the other was trying to win, and gradually not talking felt safer. It was not about money; it was that neither knew what the other actually needed.
Our approach
Repairing the conversation, not winning the argument
Work began with separate sessions so that each could speak without pressure. It turned out that both were afraid of something: one of losing independence, the other of not mattering.
In joint sessions clear rules were set: one person speaks at a time, listening without reacting, and returning to the subject in the next session.
Outcome
A conversation that gets somewhere
In the third month they said they had finished an argument without walking out for the first time. By the end of treatment their recurring pattern was clearly visible, and they knew when to step into it.
«I thought the problem was that we did not love each other any more. Now we know we do — we had simply stopped knowing how to talk.»
