Almost everyone knows bad nights: thoughts that will not come, waking at three, sleep that runs out before morning. The problem begins when that pattern runs three nights running and then continues for three weeks.

Where is the line?

Chronic insomnia means trouble falling asleep and trouble staying asleep — three or more nights a week, for three months in a row, with visible consequences at work and in relationships.
The thing most clients do not know: in most cases the main problem is not sleep but **worry about** sleep. The harder you try to sleep, the worse you sleep, and the cycle is complete.

Three things that genuinely help

Three nights a week

Three or more, three months in a row, means it is chronic.

Daytime cost

If poor sleep affects your focus, mood or work, that is a sign.

Sleep pressure

If you delay bedtime to build up pressure, the cycle is taking hold.

What you can try tomorrow

Fix your waking time this week — even after a bad night. Not your bedtime. Go outside for half an hour after waking and take in daylight; it is the one thing that shifts your body clock.

In short

Chronic insomnia has a known treatment without medication, and progress usually does not start with sleeping better — it starts with worrying less about sleep.

«I thought I had to try harder at night. Then I realised the harder I tried, the worse I slept.»
